How to Clean and store Fruits and Veggies

This easy and inexpensive method of cleaning and storing my Fruits and vegetables has been such a big money saver.

Using this easy system has prevented my fresh foods from going bad before we could eat them.

I purchase my Organic Fruits and Veggies at the beginning of the week and then line them all up and start the soaking and storing process… I typically only have to do this once a week.

First I place a LARGE CLEAN BOWL in the sink and fill it with 3 CUPS TAP WATER and 1 CUP OF 5% DISTILLED WHITE VINEGAR.
I then place the vegetable or fruit in the water and leave it for 5- 10 MINUTES occasionally mixing the fruit to cover all sides.

After the veggies or fruit are done soaking I thoroughly rinse them with water and lay them out to dry on a FLOUR SACK TOWEL.

***I typically change the water/vinegar mixture out between each wash but will sometimes wash certain vegetables together. For instance: I will wash my peppers and cherry tomatoes at the same time but will change the water for my apples, blueberries, grapes etc.***

For fruits that will stain such as blueberries and strawberries, I typically just use a colander to drain them versus a towel.

Here’s the secret to keeping your veggies and fruit fresh for weeks: Once the Fruits and veggies are completely dry, I line the bottom of a GLASS STORAGE CONTAINER with a folded paper towel and then put the veggie or fruit in it and seal it the Refrigerate. THESE CONTAINERS are what keep everything lasting for long periods since they seal air tight.

I cut up my Bell peppers or anything large first before putting them in the container. Obviously I can’t do this with apples and pears since they will brown so they just go in a PLASTIC FRIDGE ORGANIZER.

Hope this method helps you save money as well as protect you and your family from harmful bacteria. I have to say that working in Microbiology over the last twenty years has given me great perspective as to what’s growing on surfaces that you can’t see. In my opinion, it’s always good to be proactive and safe.
